Here’s the transcript from today’s #MusicBiz tweetchat that I hold every Thursday that I’m not on the road. For an updated schedule, check the Artist’s EDGE Events Page.
These tweets have been edited so that the conversation flows a bit more smoothly. Enjoy!
hilbilyhellcats Hello Debra, made it to my first tweetchat
nicolesharpe Hi Debra! Glad I’ve made it to tweetchat this week.
artistsedge Welcome! glad you’re here
artistsedge Any questions/topics you’d like to talk about today, or shall I start?
artistsedge Next week I’ll be delivering “How to get started on Twitter” for my Artist’s EDGE Membership.
artistsedge What’s the most important thing Twitter newbies should know or what do U need to know?
hilbilyhellcats I need to actually read the instructions then get a strategy
artistsedge @hilbilyhellcats I’ll definitely be covering the basics in the class next week. 4 strategy, follow the Multiple Streams model
nicolesharpe What’s the difference between Twitter and Facebook? Is one better? Do I need BOTH?
artistsedge @nicolesharpe Great Q?! I think of it like this: Twitter is a cocktail party. Facebook is dinner with friends.
artistsedge @nicolesharpe Linkedin is a business networking event. Youtube is a highschool talent show ;0 hehehehe
artistsedge @nicolesharpe yes, you need both. b/c ppl have preferences. You also need to be saying different things on both.
nicolesharpe @artistsedge I’m loving the comparisons! Except that my inner introvert HATES cocktail parties…
nicolesharpe @artistsedge …But I get the difference, I think: Facebook deepens relationships, including those initiated on Twitter…???
artistsedge @nicolesharpe I can relate to that. But think of twitter more as short, fun, & valuable conversation. FB [Facebook] is opp 4 deeper rel’p
artistsedge @nicolesharpe yes, & u’ll find diff ppl/fans in each location. b/c they’re looking for diff kinds of interaction
artistsedge LOL – a cocktail party caterer just RT my comment on diff btwn FB & Twitter #clueless
nicolesharpe @artistsedge LOL. I’m just getting the hang of FB, not so much with Twitter. Cocktail party analogy helps.
artistsedge Here’s a trick. Make sure your “Name” in your profile has a space between first and last names – Debra Russell, not DebraRussell
hilbilyhellcats I tweet with a modification of my band’s name. should I be tweeting from my real name?
artistsedge @hilbilyhellcats There R varying opinions on that. I tweet as artistsedge b/c Debra Russell is such a common name – taken in all its forms
artistsedge If you have your name in your profile & full band name in bio for searchability, UR OK.
artistsedge It becomes a question of what brand do U want to establish? With ur partnership issues, U might want to focus on ur name, tho
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge O.K., I need to revise my profile for searchability
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge yes, good point, I need to rebrand out of the partnership and into my own name
artistsedge You can have more than one twitter account – 1 4 U & 1 4 band. But you must tweet different on both – more work
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge good! I was just thinking I didn’t have enough work to do_
artistsedge @hilbilyhellcats Yeah, I’d pick 1 or the other to start
artistsedge My #1 pet peeve and reason I won’t follow someone back – no info in bio
nicolesharpe Some people may find it intimidating to write their bios, so they keep procrastinating, thinking it won’t matter.
artistsedge @nicolesharpe twitter bio doesn’t need 2B fancy or even full sentences. Fill it w/your key words – who do U want 2 attract?
artistsedge Use Niche Marketing principles – who is ur target market & what R they searching 4 will lead to ur key words
nicolesharpe @artistsedge Great advice. Pushes me to think of myself as a product, a brand.
artistsedge @nicolesharpe well, at least ur music as a product/brand. Ur so much more than that
artistsedge #2 Twitter Pet Peeve – using dark background and dark lettering so I can’t READ ur bio!
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge A good day for me- I finally downloaded and LABELLED all the calls and put them on my ipod to listen while walking
artistsedge @hilbilyhellcats That’s the way to use your Artist’s EDGE Membership
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge it would be cool if the calls somehow downloaded prelabeled, rather than e76ft3%jinhs.mp3
artistsedge @hilbilyhellcats Yeah, I’m limited by the system I use – it’s a 3rd party system called Audio Acrobat
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge thanks for the spelling correction!
artistsedge @hilbilyhellcats I had to fix it to get it short enough to RT – here’s another tip. If U want to be RTed, keep it under 120 Ch
artistsedge When someone RTs your Tweets, say thank you. They’ve given you a gift
nicolesharpe @artistsedge Thanks for the RT!
You may be my first RT – I feel honored!
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge thank you!
artistsedge #3 Twitter Pet Peeve – tied – quotes w/o attribution and marketing w/o relationship
nicolesharpe @artistsedge Marketing w/o relationship – examples please?
artistsedge @replies “listen 2 my music” w/o any other conversation RT @nicolesharpe: Marketing w/o relationship – examples please?
artistsedge Telling me 2 buy your product w/o even knowing if I’m ur target market
artistsedge by email it’s known as spam – it’s also spam on twitter.
artistsedge A lot of the techniques ppl used on myspace – which is why myspace died – are egregiously bad on twitter
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge 90% of the comments to me on myspace are peoples mp3′s or band videos, people I don’t know
artistsedge EXACTLY mktg w/o rel’p RT @hilbilyhellcats: 90% of the comments 2 me on myspace R ppls mp3s or band vids, ppl I dont know
nicolesharpe I hardly use MySpace anymore. Lacks the FB relationship or the Twitter focus. Great musician tools though.
artistsedge more mktg w/o rel’p ex: all ur tweets R promotion w/o any interaction. Not responding when ppl talk to U w/@replies. so many…
nicolesharpe I’ll compile your Twitter pet peeves into a Dont’s list. Great guidance.
artistsedge ooh, great blog post idea! RT @nicolesharpe: Ill compile your Twitter pet peeves into a Donts list. Great guidance.
nicolesharpe @artistsedge Twitter pet-peeves post would be great for marketing-challenged artists like myself.
artistsedge @nicolesharpe I’ll get right on that! Thanks for the idea!
artistsedge cool new productivity technique. I emailed myself @nicholesharpe suggestion, via @tweetdeck & Sched it via @manymoon
artistsedge @nicolesharpe FB or Reverbnation tools are better than MS [MySpace] for musicians
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge if Facebook had a default landing page calendar and mp3s for bands, they could finish myspace off
artistsedge Use FB & Twitter & RN [ReverbNation] to gen traffic 2 YOUR website. Never depend on 3rd party website as the final word in your online presence
artistsedge What if u get blocked by FB? Or they go out of business? U need to control your online destiny
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge would sonicbids, broadjam, or reverbnation page qualify as ur own website?
artistsedge No! RT @hilbilyhellcats: would sonicbids, broadjam, or reverbnation page qualify as ur own website?
nicolesharpe I use FB a lot, warming up to ReverbNation. Now scheduling to spend more time CREATING so I’ll have MUSIC to PROMOTE.
artistsedge @nicolesharpe that’s awesome. Gotta balance both
artistsedge Your website is “yourbandname.com” – using wordpress it’s simple, easy & inexpensive. No more excuses.
artistsedge SB [Sonic Bids], BJ [Broad Jam], RN [ReverbNation], FB, MS, etc – they’re all just traffic generators and relationship builders
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge what about hostbaby?
artistsedge @hilbilyhellcats hostbaby … it’s a crossover – it is your website, BUT, again, what if CDBaby goes out of business?
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge gary vaynerchuk says to host yourname.com at tumblr-what about tumblr compared to wordpress?
artistsedge I don’t know about tumblr – on my list to explore – but I’m guessing it’s not a hosting site – it’s a social media site…
artistsedge @hilbilyhellcats I don’t mean wordpress.com – I mean download wordpress (the program) to ur hosted website. via godaddy, 1&1, etc.
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge heck, what if godaddy goes out of business?
artistsedge @hilbilyhellcats Yeah, but if godaddy goes out of business YOU still own your website, and you just get it up on another host
artistsedge Transferring from one host to another is a pain in the butt, but it’s a 24 hr DNS change – not starting over from scratch
artistsedge If your dependent on FB – they OWN your page, you don’t…
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge wordpress program vs. wordpress.com- will have to look up what you mean
artistsedge wordpress.com – 3rd party blogging site, like blogger. They own the pages, U don’t. wordpress.org – actual open source program
hilbilyhellcats @artistsedge thanks, I had not heard of that
nicolesharpe Learnt a lot today. Off to explore manymoon and wordpress.
artistsedge @nicolesharpe cool! see you next week!
artistsedge OK – this has been a very productive and lively conversation on Tweetchat! I’ll post the full transcript on my blog!
artistsedge Thanks for playing and we’ll see you next week! Same bat time. Same bat channel
